There is some controversy about the role of Harvey Ellis in the design of this piece. Many of the design elements and proportions are seen in the illustrations Ellis made for Stickley’s “The Craftsman” magazine, but there is no solid documentation that Ellis prepared drawings for factory production. This is discussed in detail in my book “Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture” and I think Ellis deserves credit, even if someone else created working drawings using his ideas.

This piece may appear monumental, but it actually is rather compact. In addition to this width, factory production included models that were wider with an additional door. The original version did not use a pull for the door, only a full-mortise lock with the key escutcheon set slightly above the mid-point of the left door stile. A pull and catch is a more practical solution as you will either misplace the key (if you remove it) or run into it on a regular basis (if you leave it in the lock.
