There are only a handful of original examples of this piece in existence. It was most likely a custom piece, not listed in Stickley’s catalog. It shares details of the No. 700 bookcase and of other drop front desks.

There is some controversy about the role of Harvey Ellis in the design of this piece. Many of the design elements and proportions are seen in the illustrations Ellis made for Stickley’s “The Craftsman” magazine, but there is no solid documentation that Ellis prepared drawings for factory production. This is discussed in detail in my book “Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture” and I think Ellis deserves credit, even if someone else created working drawings using his ideas.

This piece may appear monumental, but it actually is rather compact. Modify or eliminate the pigeonhole insert behind the drop front and you have the ideal home for your laptop (or other) computer.

The exact hardware is not available from any source that I am aware of, but commercial strap hinges and pulls come close.
